HE WAS CERTAIN HE WAS GOING TO DIE. THE FACT THAT HE DIDN'T MADE THIS ONE TRULY LIFE CHANGING EXPERIENCEFaced with your own mortality, life’s priorities suddenly become crystal clear. Cesar Trujillo learned this lesson in the middle of the night in February 2010. Away on business in Santiago, Chile, he awoke at 3:30 a.m. in his 15th-floor hotel room to a chaotic jolt - a catastrophic 8.8 magnitude earthquake that claimed the lives of hundreds of people throughout the country. “It seemed to last forever, and the power and the sounds were indescribable,” Cesar says. “It was the only time in my life that I truly thought I was going to die.” Cesar was scheduled to fly home for one of his daughter’s birthdays that morning, but in that moment, all hecould think of is that he would never see his family again. When the shaking stopped and he was still alive, heimmediately decided to re-evaluate how he was living his life. He realized that, as a devoted husband and fatherof five, nothing was more important to him than his family. Despite his lucrative role at the time as the Managerfor Latin America for a major furniture manufacturer, he needed to be closer to home. He also realized that no matter how much money he was making, life is too short to spend it doing something he wasn’t passionate about. AN ENTREPRENEUR AT HEARTTo know Cesar is to know a true self-starter. He came to the United States from his native Colombia at nine years of age. His mother was widowed and worked hard to provide for Cesar and his three sibling, but early on he learned that he would have to earn his own spending money. So at the tender age of 9, he began an after-school paper route in Alexandria, VA. He sold lemonade on his block, sold magazine subscriptions door to door andcollected returnable bottles to earn money. As he got older, he began working in construction. Extremely studious, he excelled in school and went on to earn his bachelor’s degree in International Affairs from George Washington University. After college, Cesar went into business for himself as an importer/exporter and later invented a revolutionary weatherproof wicker used for outdoor furniture. He built a factory in Honduras from the ground up and while there, he began buying and renovating houses as a side project. He soon realized his passion for real estate. When the earthquake prompted him to reconsider every aspect of his life, he decided to stop traveling every week and pursue a career in real estate back home in Port St. Lucie.
